I notice a common theme in the world of dating and that is most dating advice focuses on the other person rather than on the individual.
We ask things like: What should I text? Should I wait? What does their behaviour mean? How do I avoid looking needy? How do I know if they like me? How do I know if they want to go on a second date?
What people fail to recognize is the power and control they have in how a date plays out. Once you recognize the influence you have in how you chose to show up, how you chose to present yourself, and start assessing how being around this person makes you feel, your anxiety about dating naturally goes down.
All of the strategies people use to manage their dating anxiety are working against them and I’ll tell you why. Because you can’t control whether another person texts you, you can’t control whether someone chooses you, and you can’t control whether a date works out the way you want it to or not.
So, what can you change?
You can change how you respond to uncertainty, you can develop greater self-trust, you can learn to recognise your patterns, and you can become much better at distinguishing anxiety from intuition, attraction from compatibility, and genuine connection from familiar emotional patterns.
Is dating anxiety something you can work through on your own? Absolutely.
You could spend months reading books, listening to podcasts, journaling, learning about attachment, practising nervous system regulation, and slowly piecing together your own patterns. Some people do exactly that.
Then there is recognizing the difference between having access to information and having a structured path for applying it to yourself. So, get honest and ask yourself how long do I want to take to learn my patterns, improve my confidence, and get better at dating. If you want to show up differently for the date tonight, the date this weekend, or the date next week, getting guided support can shorten the learning curve considerably.
Take a second and reflect on the emotional and mental cost of repeating the same dating patterns, choosing the wrong people, embarrassment and regret of not showing up as the best version of you, or avoiding asking for a second date with someone you really like because your anxiety and fear of rejection got in the way.
The investment in changing the pattern is considerably smaller than the cost of continuing it.
You don’t need to eliminate every nervous feeling before you date to get the dating results you want. You need to become someone who can feel uncertainty without allowing it to take over and impact how you show up.
Dating changes when you stop asking how do I make them choose me? And you start asking is this right for me? Imagine being able to leave the date feeling grounded and confident in how you showed up regardless of the outcome.
That’s the shift from dating anxiety to dating with self-trust.
